March Meeting at Broad Ripple GOP – Featuring Dr. Allison Barber

Don’t miss GIRWC’s next Women of Influence GOP club event. Our next meeting will be with Broad Ripple GOP at their regularly scheduled March meeting. Our featured speaker is Dr. Allison Barber, Chancellor of WGU Indiana.

Date: Wednesday, March 16, 6 pm
Location: Usual Suspects, 6319 Guilford Ave.

Dr. Allison Barber is the chancellor of WGU Indiana, the state’s online, competency-based university.

An Indiana native, Allison’s portfolio includes more than 25 years of experience in education and public service. Prior to her position at WGU Indiana, Allison was the president of her own strategic communications firm in the Washington, D.C. area. She was also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, teaching in the master’s program for Public Relations and Corporate Communications.

Allison spent more than seven years at the Department of Defense. She was the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Internal Communications and Public Liaison. In this position, she was responsible for the Department’s worldwide communications to the men and women of the military, and for community relations programs that linked citizens to members of the Armed Forces at home and abroad. Allison worked to establish the Pentagon Channel, created the New Media division for the Pentagon, and provided oversight to the Defense Media Center, Armed Forces Radio and Television, and Stars and Stripes newspaper. She was also responsible for national programs that protect and enhance the morale of the military members and their families.

Allison worked at the White House during the early stages of the war in Afghanistan and again during the buildup phase of the war in Iraq. She helped create the Office of Global Communications, which provided a coordinated communication effort for the Administration.

February Meeting

GIRWC is changing up our format in 2016!  Instead of monthly luncheons, we will be teaming up with other GOP clubs throughout Marion County to sponsor meetings and bring you Women of Influence as our speakers.

Our first joint-meeting will be with Downtown GOP at their regularly scheduled February meeting.  Our featured speaker is Teresa Lubbers, Commissioner for the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

Date: Wednesday, Feb. 3, 5:30 pm
Location: The Elbow Room, 605 N. Pennsylvania St.

Teresa Lubbers was appointed in 2009 to serve as Indiana’s Commissioner for Higher Education, the coordinating agency charged with ensuring that the state’s postsecondary education system is aligned to meet the needs of students and the state. Prior to joining the Commission, Lubbers served in the Indiana State Senate for 17 years, leading on education and economic development issues as Chair of the Senate Education and Career Development Committee.

As Commissioner, Lubbers has worked to increase college completion, improve productivity, and ensure academic quality. She has partnered with policymakers and higher education leaders to implement the state’s higher education strategic plan, Reaching Higher, Achieving More, and promoted innovative educational models and efforts to control college costs.

Lubbers is a past chair and a current member of both the State Higher Education Executive Officers and the Midwestern Higher Education Compact. She serves as a Commissioner for the Education Commission of the States and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning.
